Volunteer’s from Sunderland’s RNLI Lifeboat and HM Coastguard station’s were scrambled into action earlier tonight [Wednesday, 28th July] when a 13 year old boy was cast adrift onboard a small tender, by friends during an evening prank.
The RNLI’s Atlantic 85 class lifeboat was launched shortly after 8:20pm to assist the teenager, whose plight had been reported to the Coastguard by passing Police Officers. This information was passed onto Humber Coastguard Marine Rescue Coordination Centre who immediately requested assistance from Sunderland’s RNLI Lifeboat and MCA Coastguard Rescue Team.
The teenager [13 year old from Hendon, Sunderland] was found to be stranded onboard the small tender some 10m from the river bank opposite Sunderland Glass Centre. He was taken onboard the Lifeboat before being transferred to the quayside where he was handed over to Officers from Sunderland Coastguard and Northumbria Police.
After being given safety advice from Coastguards at the scene, the teenager was taken home by Police Officers.
Paul Nicholson, Senior Helmsman at Sunderland RNLI Lifeboat Station, said: "The teenager involved in this incident could have easily found himself in serious difficulty had he ended up falling from the tender into the river. Thankfully on this occasion the potentially dangerous prank was sighted by a passing Police Officer who immediately reported to situation to the Coastguard Operations Room”.
As a registered charity the RNLI relies on voluntary donations and legacies from the public for its income.
