Loch Ness relay swim by six ladies from London's Serpentine Swimming Club
Posted on Thursday, July 29 @ 02:46:10 CDT by Editors

Six intrepid women will attempt a marathon relay swim of the length of Loch Ness (23 miles) next week. The charity event will take place on a single day between 4th and 8th August 2010 ( with the weather having the final say) and the team expect to be in the water for between 20 and 25 hours.

Wearing their specially designed tartan swimming costumes, the women will have to endure average water temperatures of around 5 - 7°C, much colder than the North Sea. The tartan contains red, representing the Serpentine Club, blue, representing the AMCR charity and purple, representing Scotland. They will be guided by a motor cruiser and safety boat provided by the Inverness Sea Scouts and will have a local guide as pilot. Some interesting facts about the event - * The swim is equivalent to 1380 lengths of a 25M swimming pool. * The total distance is the same as swimming the English Channel. * The oldest swimmer in the team is 65 years old. The women are aiming to raise £50,000 for the AMCR (Afghan Mother and Child Rescue) to be used to build a hospital specifically for women and children in a remote part of Afghanistan The entire swim will be observed and monitored by a representative from the BLDSA (British Long Distance Swimming Association). Loch Ness RNLI have advised the team on local conditions and the Coastguard control room in Aberdeen has been informed of the event.
